Paphos and the West
A year round resort combining the old and the new through its rich historical sites and modern hotels, bars and night clubs. There are a number of excavated Roman Villas, which attract a large number of tourists throughout the year. New housing developments in and around Paphos cater for its growing popularity. To the northwest are the towns of Polis and Latchi. They are smaller resorts which are becoming more developed, but still retain much of their original character.
According to legend, Aphrodite the Greek goddess of beauty and love, was not born, she emerged fully grown and beautiful from the surf near Paphos. Once the capital of Cyprus, this colourful resort, holds a market in the old town, where historical sites mingle with the modern part of town known as Kato Paphos. The Troodos Mountains rising to over 1,400 metres above sea level, the highest point in Cyprus, provide spectacular scenery. The most popular beach is in the developing area of Coral Beach, where there are numerous coves and sandy bays.
